a bit of sparkle

Coat: Topshop / Sweater: Topshop / Cords: Loft / Boots: Steve Madden (similar)
Bag: thanks to Tia! / Lipstick: Topshop 'Inhibition' / Glasses: Anne et Valentin

Sorry for the bit of a break there friends! First it was the holidays and then it was transitioning back to school for a new semester and then it was work, work, work. Sometimes it feels as if January is more of a time for "spring cleaning" than actual spring is...a new year, new goals to set, cleaning out and reorganizing, and sometimes even starting over.

Speaking of new: a number of new acquisitions on display here! (Appropriate language too seeing as these were taken in the art museum's atrium.) In fact I think nothing but the coat (and my glasses and my...face) has been on the blog before. The sweater, bag, cords, and boots were Christmas gifts (thanks family and friends!!) and I've worn these glasses on here just recently but didn't point out that they're new too. I obviously have a love of round tortoiseshell glasses and I love how these make such a statement. With them and the bag, my lipstick, nail polish, and corduroys I tried to imbue a bit of Pantone's color of the year 2015 - Marsala - into my getup. These photos don't quite convey the nice dark maroon of my cords. (Also I apologize for the vaguely grumpy face I put on...I was having a bit of camera trouble!)

Anyway I hope everyone is recovering from the start of the new year/semester. Get lots of sleep and stay healthy!!

Much love, Julia

currently craving / velvet

1: Modcloth / 2: Modcloth / 3: Forever 21 / 4: Topshop
5: Forever 21 / 6: Uniqlo / 7: New Look / 8: Modcloth

Velvet and I have a love-hate relationship in that I love it, and I hate that I don't have any of it. Strange that every winter comes and I crave velvet and never make the purchase...maybe this year! I could start my velvet investment small with that hair bow but those gorgeous Jeffrey Campbell boots are calling my name too.

How about you? How do you wear your velvet? Or what velveteen pieces are you craving?

1st blog birthday

Monday, January 5, 2015

Leather Jacket: Topshop / Turtleneck: Banana Republic / Skirt: New Look
Boots: INC, gift from Gram / Clutch: Kate Spade, gift from Sarah / Lipstick: Clinique 'Crimson'

Looking at other fashion blogs, I'll sometimes see the girl celebrating her blog's anniversary by going out and buying balloons, cupcakes, the works. And I think, that's pretty silly. How would that conversation go? Buying a decorated cake like, "Oh, is it your birthday?" "No it's my blog's birthday." "Your dog's birthday?" "No, my blog's." ... Kinda weird. But then I thought, ya know, I'm probably going to want a cupcake today anyway (read: everyday) so why not try and justify it? Or well at least make myself feel a little bit better.

So here we are, it's been one year! I honestly started this blog on a whim, a semi-fulfilled New Year's Resolution, if you will. And although this is first and foremost a fashion blog, it's been a good way to track my time. Let's see, this past year I:
-lived half the year in England
-got to see amazing places around Scotland, Prague, Vienna, Greece, the American South, and NYC
-had too much incredible food to count
-spent time with my family and with friends old and new
-started my senior year of college (!!!)
-got a job after college (!!!!)
-and blogged semi-consistently throughout it all!

I know I just said this in my actual New Year's post, but I want to thank you all again for assisting and joining me on this somewhat experimental ride. Big, big, BIG thank you to my parents, especially my dad who is always willing to lend his photographic expertise, and to all the friends that I've bugged to fill in too. And obviously thanks to all of those who read, share, politely look at my blog because I've begged you, etc.

I do feel a bit like I did this time last year - not quite knowing what the year will hold and if this blog will even be a "thing" for much longer. I hope it will though! It's been a fun, creative, sometimes wacky experience. Here's to the next!

new year's

Top: Banana Republic / Skirt: Madewell (in stores) / Shoes: Topshop
Necklace: Madewell / Cuff: Madewell / Glasses: Anne et Valentin / Lips: Clinique

Happy New Year everybody!!!

While I didn't don any sequins I tried to stay in the classic NYE color palette (which I probably completely made up in my head) of black and gold. All of these lovely gold pieces are from Madewell, though oddly not on their online store - so run to your closest mall quick! Or don't, depending on what your resolutions are. I guess I should put some thought into those, or maybe even a wistful recounting of the past year, but both of those seem time-consuming and I'm off to another holiday party... So let's just say-
Here's to the new year, may it be a stress-free, happy, and healthy one!

Many thanks for all those special people in my life, including but not limited to my photographers, make-up artists, and personal motivators...AKA those three best ladies up there and my parents (love you!!). And many thanks to all of you for making my first year of blogging (!) an exciting ride and, as always, thanks for reading.
