a little eighties

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Top: Zara, old (similar here) / Shorts: Topshop / Sandals: Target, old / Lipstick: MAC 'Relentlessly Red'

Something about fluorescent pink, short shorts, and a denim jacket reminds me of the 80s - not that I even lived in them. This floral denim pair from Topshop was a part of my mission to add (and wear) more shorts in my wardrobe. I love that these can be high-waisted, but even though the print is subtle, I'm having trouble finding a ton of matches for it. Gotta always be up for that challenge when buying something new, right?
'A little eighties' could also refer to the heatwaves we've been getting in the Midwest this summer. Waves is the appropriate term, too - for three days straight it'll be eighty degrees and then it'll rain, be cold, and start all over. As Jimmy Fallon said, it's like God put the weather on shuffle!

Hope you all are having a lovely day! Thanks for reading!

currently craving / aritzia (and keep!)

Friday, July 25, 2014

1 ($23) / 2 ($90) / 3 ($43) / 4 ($33) / 5 ($10) / 6 ($28) / 7 ($39) / 8 ($28)

I'd heard of Aritzia a few months ago but never investigated fully, thinking them to be another one of those out of my price range retailers. I was surprised and delighted when I clicked my way to their homepage and saw a mid-summer sale going on. It reminds me a little bit of Zara, with clean-cut, high-quality pieces at a reasonable price, especially when they're on sale. These are just a few of my favorites (that moto jacket though...) but if you want to see more of my picks from Aritzia and other of my online shopping wishlist items, be sure to follow me on keep! Keep.com is kind of like the in-browser bookmarking function, but this site's tailored for fashion bookmarks especially, making it easier to organize your online shopping wishlist, and check out what other people are buying too!

Happy Friday everyone! Treat yo selves this weekend. Much love xx

Zoe manages to nail contemporary, retro, and classic in her style. I am dying over her black and camel outfit up there. And while I admire Zoe for her style and her acting, I am most impressed by her eloquent expressions of feminism. Like her name-twin Zooey Deschanel, she isn't ashamed to dress and appear feminine while also being a feminist, knowing that the two aren't mutually exclusive. She knows that a woman can dress how she wants, girly or no, and can still "preach, a woman can work, a woman can fight, a woman can build, can rule, can conquer, can destroy just as much as a man can." (x) You go, Zoe. Also, it was announced today that she is pregnant!!

Also, also, how gorgeous is this hairstyle? I need to get myself an occasion to do it.

take your dog for a walk

Sunday, July 20, 2014

Top: old, try here / Overalls: Topshop / Sandals: Dolce Vita / Hair Bow: H&M / Sunglasses: Ray-Ban

Hopped on the overalls train, and I have no regrets. These ones from Topshop are just loose enough to be comfy and casual, but the wash makes them fun to dress up too. I went simple for my first time wearing them - easy black and white stripes, with my new Dolce Vita sandals from Nordstrom Rack. Still loving my new Canon and how well it works!

Being home for summer to me means taking my dog Shannon for walks. I recently learned about an app called WoofTrax for your iPhone that you set up whenever you take your dog for a walk. The total number of miles you walk gets translated into donations for your local animal shelter! The more people in your area that use the app, the more money is generated. I've only used it a handful of times, but it's a pretty cool app with a simple setup that could mean a lot of good work. So if you're a dog owner or a dog walker check it out!

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well! Much love and thanks for reading xx

Blouse: gift (similar here) / Skirt: H&M, old (similar here) / Flats: Sole Society (on sale!)

Hi friends! I'm excited to share these pictures for a few reasons, the main being that I used my new camera to shoot them! My old camera, an Olympus that I've had for over seven years, was finally starting to crack and so my dad generously upgraded me to a Canon G16. It's a fantastic size and the pictures already come out clearer and of higher quality. I'm still pretty green when it comes to cameras in general, so if anyone has any inside info, especially when it comes to Canons, please share!!

These photos were taken at the art museum, which was recently renovated and has gorgeous wide, open spaces and beautifully lit rooms. I did not dress in cream tones to intentionally match the surrounding space and marble, but what a happy accident to occur in such an artsy space!

Hope everyone is having a great week so far! Thanks for reading xx

Cardigan: Madewell / Tee: old / Jeans: Topshop Hayden / Chelsea Boots: Topshop (or love this style!)

Hi friends! So I got five inches cut off my hair. I can't remember the last time I had it this short but after spending a year in a dozen different climates I felt it was time to lose some dead weight. Or that's what I'm telling myself as I stare longingly at old photos with my long hair still in tact... No, I'm glad for a change, even if it's a pretty minor one! I'm also so so glad for shopping days with my mom - she convinced me into the boyfriend jeans trend and I managed to snag these Chelsea boots that I'd of course been eyeing all year in England but never committed to. Lucky I waited, as they were half off! Now are these boyfriend jeans? Or mom jeans? Or your boyfriend's mom jeans? The world may never know.

Hope you're having a good one, friends! Thanks for reading xx

Images via: JustJared, Holland Style, StyleBistro

Holland is a master of the perfect hair and the pointy heel. She can go from severe and haute couture to easy street wear in a flash, and all with the perfect use of red lipstick. I'm dying over that lace-cut white blazer and the all-green getup. I might have to do a 'look for less' post once I hunt down cheaper versions!

Hope everyone is having a great day! Much love xx

new & minted

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Dress: Stylemint (sold out) / Sweater: borrowed from mom / Shoes: Sole Society (on sale!) / Purse: Cambridge Satchel Company in "Honeysuckle" / Sunglasses: Madewell

I almost titled this post 'Boho-Ro-Kimono' because those are the three things going on in this outfit: boho (or at least my distilled version of it), romantic, and a kimono. Or faux-kimono. Suffice to say, that sounds silly and even with all those elements the outfit still came together. (But take lots of photos in front of pretty art museums and it looks good enough, right?) Anyway. Without the sweater this dress is a little tea-party type and maybe too fancy for everyday walking around, plus the sweater matches my new shoes so that's a plus. These shoes are in their breaking-in phase which means I have to wear them everywhere - or that's just an excuse because they're oh so pretty.

Hope everyone is having a great week so far! Happy Hump Day! Much love.

honey bee

Saturday, July 5, 2014

Top: Jack Wills (love it as a blouse too!) / Skirt: Jack Wills (here in blue or pink) / Sandals: Target, old

Yes, more bee-printed attire. I warned you, didn't I? When I walked into Jack Wills a few months ago and saw all their bee-themed items I nearly died. I had a hard time not using my gift card on all of them. Hopefully my addiction to wearing bees doesn't backfire and attract real ones, now that we're in the middle of summer. Speaking of middle, this is the Middle Path on my college campus, as it literally runs through the center and connects everything together...ahh so many plush metaphors to be drawn from that, but obviously it's also just a really beautiful place to stand in.

Hope everyone's summers are going well! Thanks for reading and happy weekend, friends.
