at the ritz

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Hi friends! Hope everyone had a great weekend. As you can see, I was lucky enough to spend part of mine in London, specifically at the Ritz. My mom came over and treated me here as an early birthday present, which was way too generous of her but we had such a lovely time. High tea included sooo many sandwiches, cakes, and scones of course. We were there for two hours and still had food left over!

Then the waiters brought out little cakes for all who were celebrating their birthdays at the Ritz. I think there were about four of us! Mine was chocolate mousse and was so rich I could barely have more than a piece! Then came the biggest surprise: this gorgeous vintage Chanel purse. I completely didn't expect it and was overwhelmed by my parents' generosity. But I also love it so much that I don't think I could have said no!

Isn't it gorgeous? Of course I'm scared to actually take it out! Will work up to that.

Pinafore: Topshop / Blouse: Madewell / Cat ringMadewell
Tights: J. Crew / Shoes: Topshop / Coat: Topshop

Hi friends! Happy Thursday!

Was excited but nervous to try the pinafore trend. I'm still not wholly convinced I can pull it off, but what better way to start than with a simple Topshop one? I must seem like a walking advertisement for Topshop - it's just so hard to resist shopping at the one in town after only buying through the website for so many years! This coat, though, was my first major purchase (splurged a little, whoops!) but I absolutely love it. If you'd told me even two years ago that I'd go around wearing a fluffy pink coat I'd have laughed in your face. But it's such a beautiful pale color and interesting shape. Topshop, you win my heart.

A major shout-out and thanks to my mate Abby for snapping these photos. Pretty nice to live right next door to someone skilled with a camera. After scarfing down brunch (Kitchen Deli we loooove you) we tried to avoid both the sun showers and onlooking students as we shot these.  Kinda awkward but not enough to keep me away from exploring more!

I'm off tomorrow to London for the weekend (feel incredibly lucky to say such a thing!). And I'll be seeing some of my favorite people, too - Gemma Arterton, Jude Law, and my mom. Just kidding of course, my mom is number one. (But...Jude Law...)

Have a wonderful weekend! Thanks for reading!

England Essentials / Part I: The Trench

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Hi friends! Sorry for the radio silence for the past week, been busy trying to settle back in and get a feel for my class schedule!

Since I started this blog halfway through my time spent in England, I'd thought I'd do a little catching-up. As I was looking through my photos from the past few months (scanning mainly for outfits of course) I noticed some objects reoccurring. So I present to you my England Essentials - not necessarily what you need to have if you're visiting (or living!) in England, just more what I've found myself wearing over and over again during my time here.

A lovely October day in Bath. Wearing She Inside sweater, New Look skirt, Primark knee socks.

Me and my buddy John Keats. Wearing Forever 21 blouse, H&M skirt, Converse.

Nutella crepes allllll day in London.

Honoring my ancestors at the spot in Plymouth where the Pilgrims left for America!

My black and tan slicker, inspired by this one worn by the lovely Emma Watson, gets me through every season and every city here in England. My coat is from a little boutique in Cleveland, but the brand is Jane Post, which you can check out here, and here are some similar options: 1, 23, 4, 5, 6

Happy Tuesday, friends!

Hi friends! Hope everyone had a great weekend. I've spent the past few days getting back to England, and jetlag made me sleep in until 1 pm today. Oops.

Suitcases + laundry + jetlag = no outfit photos. Instead I present to you a few of my favorites worn by the fabulous Emma Stone. Emma completely embodies effortless chic. And I am envious of her collection of boots, hats, and sunglasses (not to mention her arm-candy...Andrew didn't make the cut in these photos but what a dreamboat am I right?). Plus her dressier outfits can span from cute with collars to just glam. The dream, right?

Happy Sunday! Hope you're having a great start to your week.

Hat: Thrifted (similar here) / Sweater: J. Crew (in stores) / Necklace: J. Crew / Jeans: Mossimo via Target / Shoes: Vintage from Brick Lane

Happy Tuesday everyone! Still below freezing here, hope everyone's staying warm!

Went to a few of my favorite places yesterday, which involved milkshakes and thrifting, so obviously was a good day. Wasn't sure if this hat was too quirky or not but I actually kinda love it! Cat ears and all. I threw on this uber comfy Christmas sweater to do a marathon watching of Portlandia with my family - definitely a good choice.

Packed today for my return trip to England on Thursday. My suitcase on the way here was filled with Christmas gifts for others and now taking it back it's filled with my own Christmas gifts! Sweet how that works out. But I'm getting anxious again about leaving. You know it's always so easy coming home - you never have to learn how to be home, but I find myself having to relearn how to be away at school or at new places. But I've lived in England for half a year already so another half will be doable. And fun, of course! Looking forward to all the adventures.

Warm wishes to all!

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Hi friends! It's noon and I'm still wrapped up in bed, thanks to the -10 degree weather outside. Can't imagine many outfit photos will be taken outside today!

If you don't use Bloglovin to follow your favorite blogs (my short list, a detailed one coming soon: Kendi Everyday, Flashes of Style, Trop Rouge, Atlantic-Pacific, WishWishWish) you should look into it! The app is great too, perfect for late night blog-stalking (as I'm wont to do...). Of course I won't complain if you give my blog a follow with a little click of the button up there!

Hope your week's going well! Stay warm!!

Plaid Blazer: Primark / Blouse: Topshop / Pants: Nordstrom / Shoes: Topshop (black version here) / Bee Ring: handmade in Exeter!

This is my interpretation of Clueless's Cher Horowitz gone British. Or well I put the outfit on and then happened to see something on the internet about Clueless. That's how things go usually, don't they? I wouldn't say any part of my personality (a summary image: picture lots of novels and tea and cats and shyness) has a "grunge" aspect but I can't resist those 90s throwbacks. This blouse from my mom is absolutely lovely - sheer panels, hidden buttons, perfect tucked in or under a pinafore. And let's talk about these red velvet shoes for a sec. So comfortable, go with practically everything, and even keep your feet warm! That's all I can ask for in a shoe and more.

Had to showcase my bee ring here. Will warn you now that I will wear anything with bees on it - it's been my nickname since the day I was born and I won't overlook the fact that bees are associated with royalty either. So glad I found this little ring at the Exeter Christmas Market, handcrafted!

Hope everyone is staying warm! To all my friends traveling between America and Europe, have safe flights!

Hat: Topman / Coat: House of Fraser (sold out, similar here and here) / Top: Nordstrom BP / Skirt: Topshop / Booties: Dolce Vita / Necklace: J.Crew / Ring: H&M (stolen from Rachel)

How do you start these things without saying the obvious? New year, a time to start new things, I've followed fashion bloggers for years, etc etc. All true, and hard to say exactly why this is my first personal foray into the style blogger world. Finally got the guts I guess. My mother wants this to be a fashion and literary blog (as we are all book lovers and creative writers in the family) and I'm interested in style and design and all the inspirations that stem from that. So we'll see where this goes, right?

Wearing pretty much all gifts from Christmas here. Had to put my beloved DV booties through some hardships in the snow, but once I move back to England (t-minus four days!) I'll have to say goodbye to the snow. I'm studying English literature in Exeter, with weekends full of theatre trips and sight-seeing so I'm sure those experiences will crop up on the blog as well. These first posts are tricky, and I feel as though I'm coming off as dry and flat, but I have to say I'm getting more and more excited as I write this. Hopefully I'll ease in and things will feel more natural, right? Absolutely. I think all my quirks and passions are too plentiful to be pent up for very long. We'll see!
